Some years ago applicants for Town Clerk positions had to go on a special training course. As it seems that we can't keep our Town Clerks for any real
length of time one wonders what is happening. Once upon a time a "Town Clerk" was a sought after post, mostly by executive experienced retired gentlemen
who had a good knowledge of finance and some law experience. Jack Barden (ex Army), Eric Drew (ex Civil Service) spring to mind. Both served the Council
for years and did an excellent job. Jack Barden was Clerk to the Ampthill Urban District Council before it became The Ampthill Town Council.
With the increase in the Town and it's population we have now become far bigger and probably with far bigger problems than in the Ampthill Urban District
days. Perhaps somebody local with the right background would be the ideal, but whether or not this is possible remains to be seen.
