Costa Coffee in Barclays Bank premises - do you agree

Postby maccum » Wed Nov 20, 2013 3:39 pm

There is a planning application in to prepare the old Barclays Building for a Costa Coffee- I have mixed feelings about this one. Could be good for access and the kids are more likely to use it but not so good for the various coffee shops already trading.

Is it just me?
I'm a bit underwhelmed by this. Bad news for the other coffee/cafe places.

I'm not so sure about that. I can't see why someone would choose Costa over the local independent places. Costa is hardly known for its great prices or personal service.

Like maccum, as someone who's busy during the day I'd have preferred something like a bistro that would open in the evening.

My owner isn't happy about it at all. My owner doesn't like the enormous cups and prices or the coffee at Costa.
I don't think my owner won't be going there.

As far as can be seen from the planning application CB13/03985 it does not appear to be Costa.

Yep that def says Costa! I am amazed that they would come to Ampthill, can we really provide enough custom? I rarely go to one so can't comment whether I would go there - probably not as I could go to one in Mk if I wanted.

I think it will be nice to finally get a coffee and something to eat on a Sunday. I do not understand why the other coffee shops close down on the weekends? Surely this would be a great time to have more trade. If I had any business in Ampthill I would definitely open at the weekend.

Costa seems to be "going for it" in this part of the World, what with the newly built premises in the Business Park in Rope Walk, Bedford, and now the prospect of them here in Ampthill.
I agree with C/C. I would not have thought that there would be enough passing trade to make it viable here in Ampthill.
More pressure on the car-parking available at Waitrose et al.
I wonder if the Councils will take Parking for Customers into consideration? We really have enough problems as it is :AA

It's great to see Ampthill's retail spaces filling up. If this goes ahead almost every unit will be occupied, won't it?

There's an empty unit on Russell Drive, but that's only just been vacated so may be back in action soon.

I'm not counting Shayler's or the White Hart because they are not currently retail units, and if rumour is to be believed they are empty because of their owners' intransigence rather than any economic reason.

If you look at the application, Costa are planning for 60+ seating. About the same as all the other coffee shops provide already and they spend most of the time half empty. What this shop will do is reduce the footfall of the coffee shops, probably resulting in most of them closing. Add to this that Waitrose are giving coffee away which has already reduced footfall and this will probably start a mini price war going knowing how nutty these shops get, it will probably mean a short but cheap time for coffee drinkers after which Costa will probably close for lack of trade and we will end up worse off.
Was still reading the Daily Mail online to make sure I've not yet become a grumpy old man.
Then one day, I found I was screaming at the screen.
Now banned from a coffee shop :-)

Let's be honest, Sizzla, why would we want another coffee shop in the Town - just because it fills up a retail outlet?
I really think that that is a very specious argument.
